What was inscribed in 1992?
Prague Castle is part of the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Prague. It is not a separately inscribed World Heritage property. The official entry, number 616, dates from 1992 and also includes Průhonice Park as a separate component.
Why the whole city matters
UNESCO recognises the relationship between Prague’s historic urban form and its architecture. Gothic building, High Baroque work and the emergence of modern architecture all contributed to its wider influence. The Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral stand within that larger network of palaces, churches, streets and public spaces.
Look beyond an individual monument
From the Castle, the view towards the Vltava helps explain this city-scale perspective. A tower has meaning as part of a skyline; a palace also belongs to a square or street. The heritage value is not confined to the most famous interiors.
What designation does not mean
World Heritage recognition does not give every visitor access to every room. Conservation, worship and state functions still shape how the Castle can be used. Plan a visit around the actual opening arrangements, while taking time to notice the urban setting that connects the monuments.
